Robert was born in London in 1969. He took his first photograph at the age of 8, and graduated in 1992 from Blackpool and The Fylde College of Art and Design.

In 1996 he shot and published a book of portraits of Premiership goalkeepers One — Images of a Goalkeeping Season and over the next ten years, worked with some of the biggest names in sport.

His unique style lays bare the uncompromising strength, pride and physicality of his subjects and it was this that inspired the then commander of the 52nd Infantry Brigade and Helmand Task Force to invite Robert to Helmand in 2008 as official war artist. Jonathan Cape published Helmand later that year, and the exhibition Helmand: Faces of Conflict had an extended run at the National War Museum in Edinburgh during 2009. In 2011, Helmand, an outdoor exhibition of large format prints was shown on the roof of the Hayward Gallery during the Southbank Centre's Festival of Britain.
